Top Ten Tips For Stress Management

Definition:
Stress Is your ‘response’ to an ‘inappropriate’ level of ‘pressure’
Stress and pressure.
It is clear from the definition that stress arises as a result of your response to an inappropriate pressure. Hence, stress management skills must include skills about controlling our reactions as well as controlling our pressures.

The word ‘inappropriate’ means not just about too much pressure but also too little pressure, when we are bored and under stimulated.

Since stress arise from how respond to pressures that are inevitable, we can avoid stress by changing the way we respond to it.
Effect of Stress
Stress-related illnesses.
Vulnerability to disease - lower the body immunity.
Low motivation.
Reduced job satisfaction.
Proneness to error.

Coping strategies
1. Self-awareness.
Being self-aware, you understand your strengths you can draw upon and weaknesses you become vulnerable with. While self-awareness is a tool for positive interpersonal interactions, it also an essential need for stress management.

2. Set Objectives
Setting targets to aim for and having a direction to move on, helps to avoid uncomfortable feelings of drift and aimlessness.
‘If we don’t know where we are going, any road will take us there’

3. Change your attitude
Changing your attitude towards something can change the way it affect you.

If you set up undue and unreasonable targets and expect perfect results, you may find this may put you under an unhealthy amount of pressure.
Aiming to have excellence may prove to be source of motivation and aiming to be best may actually go beyond this and put you in stress.

4. Be assertive
Assertiveness is a significant part of stress management and being assertive means finding a comfortable balance between being submissive and being aggressive.

Assertiveness helps to stop other people getting what they want at your expense, helps avoid conflicts and minimise harmful effects.

5. Keep control
When you are under pressure it is easy for you to loose your grip, make mistakes, judgements become clouded.

Staying calm and keeping at the top of what you are dealing with is therefore a good advice.

6. Set boundaries
This is about what is your responsibility and what is not.

If you do not realise your responsibilities you may find in difficulties when something goes wrong.

If you take up weight of things you not responsible you are giving yourselves an additional burden.

7. Time management
Effective time management skills are essential for successful approach for working people.

8. Use support
If you try to cope with pressures by yourself without help from anyone else, seeing asking for support as a sign of weakness, it will be dangerous and something to be avoided.

Asking support from others is a sign of strength that we are adopting a sensible and realistic approach to stress management.

9. Avoid unhelpful coping methods
While some coping methods are constructive and positive others may be harmful, for example, attempting to cope by heavy drinking, responding with violence, or trying to deny to deny there is a problem. The net result will be even greater pressure and worse problems.

10. Be kind to yourself
If you become very hard to yourself , setting unrealistic targets, undervaluing your achievements you may make life difficult for yourself.
Be kind to yourself, by keeping strengths and weaknesses in perspective, not adopting unduly harsh attitude towards yourself.

Conclusion
Stress management is a set of skills to be taken very seriously since it is potentially a very destructive problem!
Stress can:
_Lead to ill-health
Reduce effectiveness
Undermine or even destroy relationships
Create a pressurise atmosphere for colleagues and so on.

Mrs. R.V.P.Balasooriya was a tutor Radiographer in the School of Radiography and now she is working as a Mammographer in UK. She is doing a post graduate course leading to a MSc. in Mammography.
