History of The School of Radiography
Started in 1957 . It was first located at the present reporting room of the radiology department of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
Later it was re located at the building just near the radiology department to give room for the renovation of the radiology department.
Using the same syllabus as that used for Society of Radiographers UK
The examination papers were brought from UK and the answer scripts were sent back to UK for marking.
The successful candidates were awarded the Member of Society of Radiographers London certificate.
Later it was converted to the Diploma of College of Radiographers London .
The change of policy of the Government of Sri Lanka came to be effective in 1970 and the Foreign Examinations were stopped from 1973.
Local examinations were introduced and the Local Certificate of proficiency was issued since then. Later it was converted to a Diploma certificate.
At the beginning the teachers were sent to UK for training.
Later it became the practice to send them to Asian countries like Thailand, India for short term training with the assistance of WHO.
Over 1200 radiographers have been trained since 1957.
In 2014 the school conducted an orientation programme for BSc Radiography graduates from the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences of University of Peradeniya, before they are given appointments by the Ministry of Health.
The number of radiographers trained in the past years is given below.
